Born to wealthy parents in Asia Minor in the 3rd century, Nicholas was raised a devout Christian. After his parents’ death, he gave his entire inheritance to assist the poor and serve God.
As Bishop of Myra he became known for his generosity, love of children and concern for sailors. Legend tells of Nicholas tossing bags of gold through a window of a poor man with three daughters, landing in their stockings or shoes; thus, three gold balls or oranges are one of his symbols.
