Born in 1798 in Brittany, France, received her First Communion at age 10, telling the priest her desire to religious life. When her father was killed, at 15 she became the family caretaker, eventually entering the Sisters of Providence as St. Theodore at 25. When Sisters were requested to come to Vincennes, Indiana, she led the mission. In 1840 they crossed the ocean, robbed of most of their money over the 40 day journey. Doing the ordinary well even with chronic health issues, she excelled in harsh frontier conditions, opening schools, orphanages, and caring for the sick. Students sought them out even before the first school buildings were built. From 1841-1852,this was the only Catholic boarding school for girls in IN. In 1846, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College was granted the first chapter for the higher education of women in the state of IN. A skilled businesswoman and virtuous leader, the congregation grew to 67 members at the time of her death at 57 in 1856.
