Living during the 4th c., in his youth he was a slave of an important man, but released after the boy committed a murder. He traveled to Egypt for adventure, but was dissatisfied with the lowly jobs available and turned to robbing Nile villages. Avoided arrest by fleeing to a Coptic Orthodox Monastery in the desert; deeply influenced by the monks’ peace, he eventually joins them. Zealous in all he did including correcting his own imperfections and fasting; in contrast, he showed great pity on his brother monks preaching humble forgiveness and became a spiritual leader. “My sins run out behind me and I do not see them, but today I am coming to judge the errors of another.” When thieves attacked the colony, he forbade defense with weapons and asked 70 brothers to retreat while he and 7 others remained to greet the invaders through non-violence. They were captured and martyred by the bandits; Moses was 75. Patron of Africa, forgiveness, nonviolence.
