Born into a Christian family in Cappadocia (Asia Minor) and inclined into a strict monastic life from his youth, tonsured on Mount Sinai. Became the Superior of the Monastery of St. Theodosios the Great in Palestine. Appointed to govern the Jerusalem Church when Syria and Palestine attacked by Persia; 90,000 Christians were killed, churches were destroyed, and Patriarch Zachariah of Jerusalem and many Christians were taken into captivity. Restored the devastated Christian shrines, among which was the Lord’s Tomb, and reverently buried murdered monks. His feast day is celebrated with various rituals in honor of farm animals. Special masses are offered, and holy water is sprinkled on fields to ward off pests and disease; horses and oxen given a day of rest. He is known for a sermon he preached on the bodily Assumption of the Virgin Mary into heaven. Died at 97 in 634.
