Born in 1852 in Connecticut the eldest son of devout Irish immigrants, he left school at 13 to work in a brass factory before starting seminary at 16, only to leave again to support his family after his father’s death. Completing his education and ordained in 1877, assigned to St. Mary’s Parish in New Haven. Served the large Irish American community, promoting spiritual and corporal works of mercy. Volunteering to become a guardian to a minor boy whose father had died and left his large family in poverty and seeing similar situations of other immigrant families, led him to found the Knights of Columbus in 1882. His vision was to provide mutual aid and fraternal support to widows and orphans who had lost their breadwinner, while empowering the laity to serve the church and its neighbors. Not strictly parish-based, it grew and today is one of the largest Catholic Fraternal organizations worldwide. Fr. McGivney died of pneumonia in 1890.
