Living around 590, she was an Irish princess and virgin who had dedicated her life to prayer when her father, the king, arranged for her to marry against her will. Wishing to preserve herself, she fled Ireland to the countryside of Wales to pursue a solitary life as a hermit. Legend tells that in 604, Brochwel, the Scottish Prince of Powys, was hunting with his dogs in hot pursuit of a rabbit, but it hid in the clothing of Melangell, which surprised the prince. The dogs cowered and fled. Struck by her beauty and hoping to marry her until he heard her story and determined piety, he was moved by her courage and sanctity to give her the land where she established a community of women religious. She remained the head of the community another 37 years, often surrounded by hares. Her tomb became a place of healing, with pilgrims even today traveling for miles to the site called Pennant Melangell. Patron of rabbits, small animals and the natural environment.
