A 5th c. saint in Ireland, the nephew of St. Patrick and the son of Conis and Darerca (Patrick’s sister), known as the “mother of saints” as most of her 17 sons and 2 daughters entered religious life, many became saints, and several of her sons were bishops. Accompanied St. Patrick to Ireland to help evangelize the country; appointed bishop of Ardagh by Patrick. Supported himself with manual labor, giving above his needs to the poor. Lived with his Aunt Lupait, but when slander spread of serious accusations against them, Patrick visited to investigate. Mel was plowing and cleared himself of the charge by miraculously digging up a live fish in the field; Lupait miraculously carried hot coals without being burned. Satisfied, Patrick advised them to live and pray far apart. Patron of Ardagh and Clonmacnois, single people who host “St. Mel’s Day” parties on his feast.
