Also known as Maximus the Theologian, he was an abbot, mystic, and Doctor of the Church. Born to nobility in 580, he worked for Emperor Heraclius before becoming a monk. Worked with Pope Martin I against the Monothelitism heresy – the doctrine that Christ had two natures but one will – and attended the Lateran Council in 649. Falsely accused of treason for his orthodox positions and taken prisoner at 82, he was tortured, his tongue cut out so her could no longer speak rebellion and his right hand cut off so he could no longer write letters. Exiled he died soon after in 662. Noted for his 90 works of theology, mysticism, and dogmatic instructions.
