Born in the 1stc. AD, a disciple of Jesus Christ. After Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus, he was chosen to take his place (Acts 1:15-26). 120 people had gathered for prayer in the Upper Room when Peter proposed one selection criterion for the new 12th apostle: someone who had been a disciple from the very beginning when Christ was baptized by John through to the Ascension. Only two men fit the description – Matthias and Joseph called Barsabbas; casting lots and trusting in God’s will, Matthias was chosen. The Church venerates him on equal footing with the other Apostles. Few facts are known about his life after his inclusion in the twelve, as this was the last and only time he is mentioned in the Bible. As an apostle he was sent out to evangelize, be persecuted and willing to suffer death in the service of the Lord. It is believed his missionary work included Asia Minor, the Caspian Sea and Ethiopia before his martyrdom by battle axe. Patron of alcoholism, carpenters, tailors.
