A 4th c. monk Zosima seeking an elder to teach him to follow the Lord with his whole heart is led to the desert where he meets a figure who flees in her nakedness; offering her a cloak she begins to speak, radiating holiness. In her youth she ran away to Alexandria, consumed by lust and depravity. Following Jerusalem pilgrims for the Exultation of the Cross, three times she is prevented from entering the Church of the Holy Sepulcher by an invisible force. Weeping over her sin and impurity, she cries out to Mary for assistance. Begging forgiveness, she is allowed to enter and finds the foot of the cross. A voice directs her to the Judean desert where she lives for 17 years on a few loaves of bread.
