Born into a noble Florence family in 1566. Learned to mediate at 9 from family confessor; took vow of virginity at 10 after her first Communion. At 16 entered Monastery of St. Mary of the Angels, a Carmelite Cloister with daily Communion (unusual at the time); critically ill one year later, made vows from her cot in the chapel, falling into an ecstasy lasting two hours, which followed after Communion for the next 40 days. The ecstasies were rich unions with God containing insights into divine truth; her revelations filled volumes over the next 6 years before a severe 5-year trial with violent temptations and physical suffering. Her continuous sufferings were a great burden but enriched by God’s extraordinary graces and she responded with love and gratitude. Read the thoughts of others and predicted future events; appeared to several persons in distant places and cured a number of sick people. Died at 41. Patron of Naples, against bodily ills and against sexual temptation. Feast Day: May 25
