Born around 316, he grew up in Italy where his father was an Imperial Horse Guard officer. While his parents were pagan, at 10 he joined Christianity which had just been legalized in the Roman Empire. As a young soldier of 15, he encountered an unclothed beggar in the cold, cutting his cloak in half to share. That night he had a vision of Christ that He was the beggar in need. Leaving the military at 20, he fully dedicated himself to Christ, traveling to Tours to study under St. Hilary. He brought his mother into the faith, countered the Arian heresy denying the divinity of Christ and established monasteries. An extraordinary evangelist, the people of Tours sought him for their new bishop. Uninterested he tried to hide in a goose pen but was discovered. Reluctantly, he became a holy and hardworking bishop, establishing a parish system to manage his dioceses and visit each annually. Retreating to monastic life in 372, he died in 397. Patron of the poor, soldiers, horses
