Born in Lima, Peru in 1579 to a Spanish father and Indian mother from Panama, he became a barber, learned medical work and at 15 joined the Dominicans; by Peru law, as an African/Indian descendant, he was limited to be a lay brother performing household tasks. Later assigned to the infirmary, his healing touch performed many miracles. Loving all people without discrimination, he served the poor and slaves from Africa. He devoted himself to penances and had the gift of bilocation. A friend of St. Rose of Lima, he also took in stray animals.
