Author of the 2nd Gospel, Mark the Evangelist is believed to be the “John Mark” referred to in the Acts of the Apostles. A cousin of St. Barnabas and son of Mary of Jerusalem whose home became a meeting place for the Apostles. Joined Paul and Barnabas on their 1st missionary journey to Antioch in 44 AD, but returned to Jerusalem when they reached Cyprus. Visited Paul in his first imprisonment as a trusted companion and in Rome when he was martyred. Close relationship and interpreter to St. Peter who called him “son.” Probably the 1st bishop of Alexandria and founder of the Church there where he lived for years and was martyred while being dragged through the streets. His Gospel written in 60-70AD based on St. Peter’s teachings, a basic source for Luke and Matthew’s Gospels. Symbol is a winged lion. Patron of notaries, Venice, barristers
