Born in 1701 in Quebcec, the first native Canadian elevated to sainthood. The eldest of six, her father died in her youth, leaving the family in poverty. Studied for two years with the Ursulines, returned home to teach her younger siblings. Married Francois in 1722, mother to six children; four died in infancy, two remaining sons became priests. Widowed at 29 and in poverty, she undertook many charitable works with complete trust in God, sewed clothes to sell to traveling traders to provide for the poor. She welcomed a blind woman into her home along with three young women; they consecrated themselves to God and promised to serve him through the poor, unknowingly founding the Sisters of Charity of Montreal, the “Grey Nuns.” Together her order rebuilt a Montreal hospital that had fallen into ruin, accepting anyone who was sick. In 1765 a fire destroyed the hospital but at age 64, she undertook its reconstruction. Called “The Mother of Universal Charity,” she died in 1771. Feast Day: October 16
