Born in 1838 in Germany, she moved to New York as an infant. With an invalid father, she started factory work in 8th grade before joining a Franciscan convent. She taught school and opened two of the first Catholic hospitals in Central New York, pioneering patient’s rights and cleanliness procedures. With six of her convent sisters she volunteered to move to Hawaii to care for the lepers in Molokai. Caring for St. Damien in his final months, she served there for 35 years, never contracting the disease. Her community provided healthcare, dignity and respect for those suffering with the disease. Patron of lepers, outcasts, HIV/AIDS
