A Discalced Carmelite nun, stigmatist and mystic, born in 1846 to Greek Catholic parents in Palestine. After losing 12 sons in infancy, her parents walked to Bethlehem to pray at the Manger asking the Holy Virgin for the grace of a daughter; Mariam was born 9 months later. Orphaned at 2, her life was struck with tragedy: suddenly being struck with total blindness and at 12, a rejected suitor cut her throat leaving her for dead – both times cured by the Blessed Virgin. In a near death vision, she recalls Heaven and a grotto with a nun dressed in blue who stitched her neck wounds and fed her soup. After entering Carmel in 1867 she experienced mystical phenomena including the stigmata and crowning with thorns. Called “The Little Arab” and “Lily of Paradise,” she is known for her active presence of the Holy Spirit and founding a Carmel in India and Bethlehem where she died of infection after a fall at 33. In 2015, the first Palestinian canonized since the early church.
