Born in 1820 in Germany with seven siblings. At the age of 6, she would help in her family’s potato patch after school and also learned spinning and weaving fabric. With other children she visited a Marian shrine by her village, singing and telling stories about God and Mary. At 21 her father passed, so she worked the land, hired for 10 cents per day as a “farm hand” (shovel) to provide for her ill-health mother and family. Others were attracted to her service to the poor in ordinary ways. Because there were no religious orders in her area, along with four other women, she formed a religious community in 1851. The Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ took as their charism “Partners in the work of the Spirit” serving the poor, sick and children, taking the public vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. Recognized by the love and simplicity with which they served, their ministry spread throughout the world. Known as Mother Maria, she died of a heart attack in 1898 and canonized in 2018.
