Born in 1890 in Italy to a close family who loved God, her farmworker father died, leaving her mother and older siblings to work the fields while Maria cared for the home and her younger sister. While sewing on her porch at age 12, an 18-yr-old neighbor Alessandro tried to assault her. When she resisted saying “No, It is a sin, God does not want it!” he stabbed her fourteen times. With wounds beyond help, she forgave him, wanting to see him in heaven. She died looking at an image of the Virgin Mary, holding a cross to her chest.
