A penitent born in Tuscany in 1247, her mother died when she was 7 and her father remarried. High spirited, she eloped at 17 and bore a son out of wedlock. Living with her boyfriend for 10 years, one day his hound led her to his murdered body in the forest, shocking Margaret into prayer and penance. Rejected by her father, she and her son found asylum at the Friars Minor in Cortona. Existing on alms, she formed The Poverelles to care for the sick poor and the Confraternity of Our Lady of Mercy. Penitential, she advanced rapidly in prayer with frequent ecstacies of contact with Jesus.
