Born in 1287 in Italy to noble parents who wanted a son, she was dwarfed, blind, hunchbacked and lame, and kept locked up and hidden throughout her childhood, abandoned at 16. Cared for by families in the city, she earned money caring for small children while teaching them about God. “Little Margaret’s” cheerfulness endeared her to everyone. Became a Dominican tertiary devoted to the sick and dying, showing a special solicitude for prisoners. Died in 1320 at 33; a crippled girl was cured at her funeral and more than 200 miracles followed. Often heard saying, "Oh, if you only knew what I have in my heart!" Inside her heart were found three pearls on which appeared to be carved religious symbols, and the images of Our Lord, the Blessed Virgin, and St Joseph. Never embalmed, her body remains incorrupt. Patron of blind, crippled, unwanted, pro-life movement
