Born in the 3rd c. to Aedesius, a pagan priest near Antioch. Her mother died shortly after childbirth, so she was nursed by a Christian woman nearby. Embracing Christianity as a consecrated virgin, she was adopted by her nurse and lived in the country as a shepherdess. When Olybrius, Governor of the Roman Diocese of the East, asked to marry her, he demanded she deny her faith, but she refused. She was cruelly tortured during which miraculous events occurred. One involved her being swallowed by Satan in the shape of a dragon, from which she escaped alive when the cross she carried irritated the dragon’s innards. Attempts to execute her by fire and then drowning, but she miraculously survived, converting thousands of spectators – all of whom were promptly executed. Eventually she was beheaded. One of the popular Middle Ages 14 Holy Helpers and one of the voices heard by St. Joan of Arc to pursue her mission. Patron of childbirth, pregnancy, against the devil. Feast Day: July 20
