Born in England in 1557 of Protestant parents, her father the sheriff of York. With a charming personality and beauty, she was a model of all virtues who married and joined the Catholic church. Her zeal led her to harbor fugitive priests in two locations, with Mass continually celebrated through the thick of the persecution. Imprisoned for two years at a time by hostile authorities testing her to deny her faith, she was condemned to death at 29, stretched out on the ground with a sharp rock on her back and crushed under a heavy door with unbearable weight.
