Born in 1080 the eldest son of Earl Erlend. The Orkney earldom was divided between Erlend and his brother Paul; in 1098, the Norwegian king unseats the earls, making his son overlord. He takes the 18-yr-old Magnus and his cousin Hakon on a raiding expedition down the coast of Scotland. Magnus refuses to participate in the raids, remaining on the ship singing psalms; he escapes and swims ashore, “disappearing” until the King’s death in 1102. Returning to Norway to become Earl of Orkney “he was a man of extraordinary distinction, strict virtue, successful in war, wise, generous, the most popular among men.” Hakon returns, the two sharing the earldom from 1105-1114. Jealous of Magnus, Hakon threatens division and battle; they agree to a sea truce, but Hakon deceptively overtakes Magnus. Meeting on land, Magnus is captured, but remains virtuous accepting his fate, struck in the head by a cook’s cleaver. Wildflowers grew at this site with a “holy light” and healings. Patron of Orkney Island. Feast Day: April 16
