Born in Italy in 1842, entered seminary at 12, ordained in 1866. From 1875-78 assisted St. John Bosco in his care of homeless children. Shortly after, pioneered a program for rehabilitation of boys and girls abandoned by society due to physical or mental disabilities, despite the opposition of civil authorities and elite critics (including playing soccer). A talented writer and preacher, he wrote books and speeches to present the problem of those with disabilities and to accept them as blessings from God as “good children.” In 1886 he opened the first established residential school in Italy with two religious congregations established to assist him: The Daughters of St. Mary of Providence (women) and The Servants of Charity (men). In 1912 he toured US cities and sent the first six Daughters to work with disabled girls in Chicago (Servants unable to come due to WWI). Two years before his death in 1915, Fr. Luigi founded the Pious Union of St. Joseph whose members pray for the dying; its first member was Pope Pius X. Feast Day: October 24
