Ninth of his name, he lost his father at 12 but his mother inspired him to pious virtue. Married to Margaret and King at 22, he led crusades in 1238 and 1267, where he died receiving the Last Sacraments. One of the most notable European monarchs of the Middle Ages, his reign is a medieval golden age of France reaching economic and political peaks. Fellow rulers esteemed him for his fairness and moral integrity, including his introduction of the presumption of innocence in criminal procedures. Valuing Catholic orthodoxy and devotions, and inspired by Christian zeal, he is regarded as the ideal Christian ruler. Patron of tertiaries, France
