A noblewoman of wealth and privilege who lived in the 300sAD. After her husband died, she left her material world and life as a wealthy widow to support and join a convent of consecrated virgins; there she was voted prioress yet did most of the menial jobs of the convent. Her close friend St Jerome described her as a blessed woman of austerity, obedience and remarkable penances. In a letter he wrote to St. Marcella, “Who will praise the blessed Lea as she deserves? She renounced painting her face and adorning her head with shining pearls. She exchanged her rich attire for sackcloth…she spent her nights in prayer, and instructed her companions through her example rather than speeches. And she looked forward to her arrival in heaven in order to receive her recompense for the virtues which she practiced on earth.” Died of natural causes in 384AD.
