Born in 225, Lawrence was a humble deacon when Pope Sixtus was arrested and beheaded by Emperor Valerian in an edict that all Christian bishops, priests and deacons should be executed. He was offered freedom if he showed Valerian where the Church’s gold and silver were located. Asking for three days, Lawrence gathered the poor and presented them as the Church’s wealth. Enraged, Valerian ordered Lawrence burned alive in public on a grill, which led to massive conversions in the Church. Legend says Lawrence rejoiced, “Turn me over, I’m done on this side!” before his death. Patron of Rome, students, chefs, poor, firefighters
