Born in Cordova, Spain, a Christian from a noble family who lived in Muslim Spain during the 9th c. Married an important official of the emirate and had two daughters. After six years, she was widowed. Years later she became a nun at the convent of Santa Maria de Cuteclara, eventually rising to abbess for nine years. Joining 50 companions who immolated themselves as Christians and volunteered for martyrdom, she publicly proclaimed her faith, blaspheming against Islam to face the death penalty. Arrested, she was flogged by the Muslim captives then scalded in vat of boiling pitch and decapitated, dying in 864. It was written about her witness, “The virtuous Laura generously confessed the faith of Jesus Christ; she was beaten for the long time, plunged into a cauldron of boiling pitch. For 3 hours she sang the praises of her God. Her relics, scattered in various church in Spain, are surrounded by the greatest veneration.” One of the Martyrs of Cordoba.
