Born in 640 to noble parents in County Cavan Ireland. Studied as a monk in celebrated monastery at Hy (later known as Iona); became a bishop and with 11 companions in 686, traveled to Rome to receive missionary faculties from Pope Conon to evangelize Franconia (Baden and Bavaria). Successful in missionary work with 2 followers (Colman, a priest, and Totnan, a deacon) converting Gosbert, Duke of Wurzburg, and a large part of his subjects to Christianity. In 689 while Gosbert away on military expedition, his wife Geilana (and brother’s widow) had the 3 missionaries beheaded while preaching in the main square as Kilian had told Golbert their marriage was forbidden by the Church. The bishop of Wurzburg built a cathedral on this spot of martyrdom where their skulls are inlaid with precious stones and venerated. Also venerated in County Kerry Ireland where a church and holy well are visited annually on his feast. Patron of rheumatism sufferers.
