One of the “first born saints of Ireland” from the late 5thc. in Ossory to royal Osriage blood; before he was conceived his mother dreamt that a star fell into her mouth, thought to convey she would bear a son whose fame and virtues would be known throughout the world. Left Ireland before the arrival of St. Patrick, converts to Christianity and becomes a pilgrim to Rome where he studied the faith. By one account St. Patrick sent Kieran to precede him and directed him to build a monastery at the site of a well, giving him a bell that would ring at the correct location (near Saighir). Built a hermit cell in the woods, wearing skins and attracting disciples including his mother with a group of women who devoted their lives to God (an image similar to John the Baptist as a forerunner to Christ), growing into the Saighir monastery. Consecrated one of the 12 Apostles of Ireland, helpers of St. Patrick; ordained first bishop of Ossory. Several healing wells with remarkable miracles attributed to him.
