One of the 12 daughters of Welsh king Brychan (Braghan) (another source says he had 24 daughters, all of whom were saints). With her great beauty she received many offers of marriage, but took a vow of virginity and pursued a religious life (hence Keyna the Maiden). Traveling widely, she founded several oratories. Around 490 she visited her nephew, St Cadoc at St. Michael’s Mount who persuaded her to return to Wales. Eventually crossed the Severn into Cornwall, residing as a hermitess for many years. Here a village is named after her and holy well exists; according to legend, whichever marriage partner drinks from the well first will have the upper hand, memorialized in a poem, “The Well of St Keyne.” Legend also has her residing near the banks of the Avon, which was swarming with serpents and uninhabitable. After she issued a fervent prayer, the serpents transformed into spiral stones (fossilized ammonites) and the land habitable. Died around 500.
