Born in Philadelphia in 1858 to a devout, wealthy family who practiced corporal works of mercy. Entering the convent, she established The Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament for Indians and Colored Americans as Mother Katherine at age 33. She inherited a multi-million-dollar estate which she gave to God and used to serve the material and spiritual well-being of the black and native American communities through schools and missions. Founded Xavier University, the first US Catholic university for African Americans. After her death at 96, she was the second American born saint canonized.
