Born in 100 the son of pagan parents that came to the faith through Platonic intellectual philosophy; as a young man he was principally attracted to the school of Plato, but found that the Christian religion answered the great questions about life and existence better than the philosophers. Upon his conversion, he continued to wear the philosophers’ mantle, becoming the first Christian philosopher and the first great apologist. Combining the Christian religion with the best elements in Greek philosophy, his writings describing the Catholic Mass and the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist continue to teach and defend the faith. In his view, philosophy was to educate and lead one to Christ. His works include “Against all Heresies” and his “Apology” now divided into two parts and addressed to Emperor Antoninus who ruled from 138-161 AD. Scourged and beheaded in Rome in 165 for refusing to sacrifice to the gods. Patron of philosophers, lecturers, orators, apologists. Feast Day: June 1
