Born in 1270 into a noble Florentine family; after her father’s death, raised by her mother and Uncle Alexis, one of the founders of the Servites. At 15 refused her family’s plan of marriage to become a Servite Tertiary; remained at home under the Order’s rule, until her mother’s death. Dedicating her life to prayer, penance and caring for the sick, other women joined her in a home and founded the Servite Tertiary Sisters, serving as Superior, but more of a servant to her subordinates, until her death. It is said “she would often fall into long moments and hours of ecstasy.” The sisters’ main devotion was to Our Lady of Sorrows, daily caring for the sick in the streets, homes and hospitals. When dying in 1341 and couldn’t receive the Eucharist in her mouth due to constant vomiting, she requested the priest lay a corporal upon her chest and lay the Eucharistic host on it; it disappeared when she died with the image of the cross, just like the one of the host, found on her chest. Patron of bodily and chronic illness.
