Feast Day: May 13

Born in Norwich in 1342, she was a Benedictine English mystic, living as an anchoress vowed to chastity and enclosed in her anchorhold (small cell attached to church). With a cat as a companion she lived, wrote and meditated from this cell, writing “16 Revelations of Divine Love”, the first English language book by a woman. These revelations from Jesus about Divine Love, the Incarnation, redemption, sin, penance and aspects of spiritual life were her focus for 20 years. Our Lord revealed to her “It was necessary that there should be sin; but all shall be well and all manner of things shall be well.” At 30 she became gravely ill near death, but saw a now famous vision from God: He showed me a little thing…a hazelnut, lying in the palm of my hand, saying “It is all that is made.” She reflected: It lasts and ever shall, for God loves it. And so have all things their beginning by the love of God. Truly, the Creator, the Keeper and the Lover.
