Feast Day: December 9

Born in 1474 a pagan Aztec, the first Mexican Catholic indigenous saint, he and his wife were among first baptized by Franciscan missionaries. On December 9, 1531 on his way to Mass, a beautiful woman introduced herself as “the ever-perfect Holy Mary…Mother of the True God.” She requested the bishop build a chapel on Tepeyac Hill, the site of a former pagan temple. Juan went to the Bishop thrice with the request; on December 12, the woman provided roses on the hill which she arranged in his tilma. Opening his tilma, the Bishop saw the miraculous image of the Virgin Mary, preserved to this day.
