Born in 1869 to a prosperous Sudanese family, she was kidnapped by slave traders as a child. Sold and tortured for the next 12 years, enduring severe punishments and daily beatings, she eventually traveled with a family to Venice, Italy, where she met the Canossian Sisters. After a legal battle for her freedom, she received the sacraments from the future Pope Pius X and joined the sisters in 1893, working as a cook for the next 42 years. She said, "If I were to meet the slave-traders, I would kneel and kiss their hands, for if that did not happen, I would not be a Christian and religious today!"
