What we know of him as a humble, compassionate protector is portrayed around the pregnancy, birth, and childhood of Jesus up to age 12 and the finding in the temple. He has two feast days: as husband to Mary (19th) and a worker (1st). He is pictured with the Child Jesus, a carpenter’s square, and a lily. The lily denotes purity and that he was chosen from among other men - “a just man shall blossom like the lily.”
