Born in Spain in 1902 to a devout Catholic family, he was called to the priesthood and ordained in 1925. He then studied law and tutored to support his family after his father’s death. On retreat in 1928, God revealed his mission: to found Opus Dei, a society for laypeople in all walks of life to follow Christ, seek holiness in daily life, and grow in love for God and others. He wrote the popular books: The Way, The Forge, and The Furrow. In 1943 he was called to establish The Priestly Society of the Holy Cross to ordain priests for Opus Dei. At the time of his death in 1975, Opus Dei was in 80 countries with 60,000 members.
