Feast Day: February 10

In 1927, Catholic Mexican soldiers (Cristeros), took up arms to defend their faith and families. 14-year-old Jose became the general's flagbearer, enthusiastically going about his duties, attending daily Mass and praying an evening Rosary with the soldiers. Captured in 1928, tortured, and ordered to renounce Christ, José refused, remembering the advice of his dear mother: have confidence in Our Lady of Guadalupe. The guards cut his feet with a knife and made him walk ten blocks along a rocky path to his burial spot. With each beating and each cut he shouted: “Viva Cristo Rey! Viva La Virgen de Guadalupe!” Patron of courage, persecution, youth, Mexico
