Born to the Jewish priest Zachariah and Elizabeth after the Angel Gabriel visited them, he was a cousin of Jesus who leapt in his mother’s womb at The Visitation. Before beginning his public ministry in 30AD, John spent time in the desert, dressed in camel hair, eating locusts and honey. He drew large crowds in Judea, including the first Apostles, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. Calling him “The Lamb of God,” John baptized Jesus in the Jordan River when the Spirit of God descended on him as a dove.
