Born in Avila, Spain in 1542 to a poor family, his father died when John was 2, which led to great suffering for him and his mother. Sent to religious boarding school for the poor, he desired religious life and joining he Carmelite Order, he became a priest in 1567. He met St. Teresa of Avila who inspired him to help her bring a strict routine back to the Carmelites as she founded new monasteries. While in Avila, he had a vision of Christ and drew “Christ from Above” which is still preserved. The reforms caused a rift in the Carmelites and led to the kidnapping and imprisonment of John in a small cell, enduring near starvation and weekly beatings; there he wrote remarkable and influential poetry. Escaping after 9 months, he went on to found new houses across Spain before his death from a skin condition in 1591. Patron of contemplatives, mystics, Spanish poets
