Born in 1500 in the Castile region of Spain, at age 14 sent to study law and theology before his ordination as a diocesan priest. Desired to be a Mexican missionary and distributed his considerable inheritance to the poor, but remained in Spain at the request of his archbishop. Developed a reputation as an engaging preacher, wise confessor and perceptive spiritual director; he also organized colleges run by priests to give spiritual direction to young people. His mystical writings are translated in several languages. Unafraid of denouncing vice in high places and investigated by the Inquisition, he gained the friendships of Sts. Francis Borgia, Ignatius of Loyola, John of God, John of the Cross and Teresa of Avila. Worked closely with the Jesuits to grow the order in Spain. Declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Benedict XVI in 2012.
