Born in Bohemia in 1811, studied theology in the Budweis seminary, but left to bring his missionary zeal to America’s European immigrants. Ordained in NY in 1836, he served the Niagara Falls area before entering the Redemptorist order, serving Baltimore and Pittsburgh. Bishop of Philadelphia at 41, he had a strong impact: first to organize a diocesan Catholic school system, promoted devotion to the Eucharist with Forty Hours Devotion, and heard confessions in at least six languages. Founded a new religious institute (the Third Order of St Francis of Glen Riddle) and the Schools Sisters of Notre Dame regarded him as their “Father in America.” Built 89 churches in seven years, several hospitals and orphanages, and increased Catholic schools in his diocese from 2 to 100. Untiring, he died of a sudden heart attack on a street at the age of 48.
