Born in 1345 in his early childhood he was cured of a disease through his parents’ prayers and consecrated to God. Became a priest in the city of Prague, a great preach who converted many; he also settled arguments and did many kind deeds. Attracting the notice of King Wenceslaus IV, who invited him to the royal court, where he became the queen’s confessor. When the king was cruel to the queen, Fr. John taught her to bear her cross patiently. One day in 1393 the king asked him to tell what the queen said in confession; Fr. John refused and was sent to prison. A 2nd request from the king offered him the option of wealth and honor or death for refusal; again Fr. John refused and was tortured with burning, tied to a wheel and thrown into the river. A strange brightness of five stars appeared over the spot where he drowned in 1393. The first martyr of the Seal of Confession, he is known as the “Martyr of the Confessional.” Patron of Czechoslovakia, confessors, against floods, against slander. Feast Day: May 16
