Born in 1801 in London, the eldest of six to a banker. With a conversion at 15, became a staunch Calvinist opposed to Roman Catholicism. Studying at Trinity College in Oxford, an Anglican deacon and priest by 24. Writing and teaching as vicar of St. Mary’s University Church developed skepticism of Evangelical emphasis on personal feelings and “sola fide.” Drawn to Catholicism’s revealed truth and the magisterium and started reading the Church fathers; took a European tour through Rome, later influenced his leadership in the Oxford Movement (encouraged the Church of England to restore many Catholic doctrines and liturgical practices). Difficult conversion to Catholicism at 44 with many family and friends disserting him. Promoted directly to cardinal, he is also known for leadership of the new Catholic University of Ireland. A well-respected theologian, his ideas summarized: “…two alternatives, the way to Rome and the way to Atheism.” Died in 1890.
