One of the fathers of the Eastern Church and the greatest of her poets. Born in 645, his ancestors remained faithful Christians when Damascus fell into Arab hands; invoking the Conqueror’s respect, they were tasked with administering the Christian law to Christian subjects of the Sultan. His father used his amassed wealth to ransom Christian slaves. Baptized at birth, John’s education was entrusted to a monk named Cosmas, ransomed by his father. John was ordained a priest and challenged the Emperor of the East as the Iconoclastic controversy became more violent; he wrote three treatises on the Veneration due to Images which were disseminated throughout Christianity and procured him the title of “The Doctor of Christian Art.” He also devoted himself to religious poetry, theological arguments in defense of Church doctrine, and heresy refutation.
