After receiving an excellent education and baptized at 18, he joined a rustic group of hermits outside his hometown, but left after 7 years due to harsh conditions. Ordained a priest in 386, his bishop put him in charge of pastoral care of the poor where he honed his gifts as a speaker. His preaching and letters displayed a refined understanding of theology and the title “Chrysostom” (golden mouth). In 398 consecrated Archbishop of Constantinople, the New Rome, with overaggressive reforms and blunt criticisms that led to false charges of treason and exile in 402. His exile proved fruitful with numerous letters to bishops and the pope. Died in exile in 407 a victim of the elements and starvation. A Church Father who carved out the deposit of faith, he is recognized as a Doctor of the Church.
