As a fun-loving boy, John would juggle and do tricks for other children. Having captured their attention, he would then lead them in the Rosary or share a sermon he had heard. Later in life, the holy Salesian priest ministered tirelessly to children, especially troubled boys, gathering them for prayer, play and learning. “Grigio,” a large grey dog that appeared suddenly at moments of danger and disappeared when it had passed, was gentle with the boys but ferocious against the Enemy. In one of his dreams, Bosco was shown a two-pronged pitchfork symbolizing a “good Confession and a good Communion.”
